In our fifth issue, the Bed and Breakfast Traveller takes you to Nelson, BC. Located in British Columbia's picturesque "Kootenay Country", Nelson offers such spectacular scenery and warm hospitality that visitors never want to leave.

Nestled in the mountains on the edge of Kootenay Lake
Many years ago, a travelling salesman, comparing Nelson to other communities in the Kootenays, dubbed it "The Queen City." Originally a Victorian mining boomtown and incorporated as a city in 1897, present-day Nelson offers residents and visitors alike a treasure trove of breathtaking mountain and lake views, inspiring historical architecture, year-round shopping and festivities, and more. It's all waiting to be discovered.

If history interests you, be sure to take a stroll along Baker Street, where the majority of the buildings have been restored to their original state. The Court House and Old City Hall are regal reminders of a period long gone. The silver boat houses on Kootenay Lake date back to 1901. Streetcar 23, a fully restored streetcar takes you on a tour that starts from Lakeside Park and follows the West Arm past Chahko Mika Mall to the Prestige Inn, and back. But history is just part of Nelson's attraction. The many shops will satisfy the most discriminating, arts and crafts stores offer local products and handmade goods, and the sidewalk cafes and restaurants serve up fare that runs the gamut from fresh coffee and warm croissants to gourmet meals. You will need at least a week to sample it all.
