dot Beacon Shore on Georgian Bay Bed & Breakfast
For the past eight years my wife and I have chosen our summer vacations to be B&B golfing tours. We would travel from town to town staying at many B&B’s and playing golf throughout Ontario. There have been only a few locations where we have stayed for more than one night at a time and an even lesser amount that we have elected to return to year after year with great anticipation. The Beacon Shore rates 5 out of 5 out of all of the places we have stayed… many time’s saying it to be our crowned jewel of B&B’s. We have had the pleasure of staying in every room available to the public and all are very accommodating. The Beacon Shore resides on a hill in a warm, picturesque, peaceful setting overlooking Georgian Bay and is minutes away from golf courses, downtown Midland and a variety of fine restaurants. Over the years we have witnessed both Jacqui and Bob’s timeless hard working efforts to keep the place warm and cozy inside and immaculate both inside and out. The gardens are breathtakingly beautiful and attract many birds especially the forever entertaining humming birds. Both Jacqui and Bob are both very kind, welcoming, and hospitable and know exactly when to let you have your space. You’ll love Bob’s laid back quick wit and Jacqui’s accurate mouth-watering descriptiveness of their homemade breakfasts that are second to none! Jacqui is a very accomplished award winning photographer and thankfully has many of her fine pictures on display so people can view them at their leisure. If she has time ask her for a few photography tips as she is very helpful (being a retired teacher) and knowledgeable. We both highly recommend staying at the Beacon Shore and are confident you will not regret it for an instant! Word to the wise… book well in advance! As usual, jobs very well done Jacqui and Bob and we are looking forward to seeing you both once again. Cathrine and Bruce Scarborough ON

My husband and I have stayed here twice this summer. Why? It's the perfect place! The house is beautiful with attention to detail at every corner. The bedrooms are extremely comfortable and super clean. The breakfast is a party for your taste buds and the owners are very nice people and run this bed and breakfast with pride and care. The location is exceptional their property slopes down to the lake where they have a dock and private water front. We enjoyed swimming every day and brought a picnic with us which we enjoyed at the dock. We will be back in the fall for sure. Jacquie and Bob seem like friends we visit! It exceeds all your expectations and more...

Scenery, wildlife, view, chairs on the dock overlooking the bay, great food, great bed, great hospitality. I couldn't ask for anything more (to use a cliché). My two-night stay at Beacon Shore in September was fabulous, the serenity I especially needed on that visit.

My favorite part was taking breakfast on the patio, mere feet away from their unique bird station, the creation of Jacquie and Robert. I watched a chickadee walk down the side of its swing and ladder as I sipped peach tea. A nuthatch shouldering a mouthy baby finch to temporary silence amused me until the opening medley of fruit arrived with home-made bread and home-made jam. Jacquie is a gourmet chef who knows the importance of ambiance, presentation, smell and taste to create a first rate experience. I didn't want it to end.

Don't miss sitting on the end of the dock as the sun sets, casting orange and rosy hues across the sky. It was silent except for the susurration of waves against the shore until I heard a distinctive honking, low in the distance then loud as a flock of Canada Geese flew overhead in their famous formation.

I loved my stay at Beacon Shore and highly recommend it to everyone, especially for writers, painters and photographers. I will return next year.

This was the best bed and breakfast ever. Jacqui and Bob were excellent hosts and the breakfast was exquisite. We stayed in the King Suite and it was fabulous. We had the whole basement to ourselves. The way they pay attention to the little details is the best. Thanks for a wonderful vacation.

My husband booked this as a surprise getaway for us last weekend and all I can say is WOW!!! What a perfect and beautiful home to stay. Jacquie and Bob were not only more than accomodating.. we were treated with kindness & such grace and with all the glory that surrounded their home on the water Gary & I felt it almost impossible to leave. We are anxious to get back there for a weekend visit again soon and want anyone reading this to know that not only was this the perfect place to be .. the owners were simply delightful! Jacquie is an amazing cook and our breakfasts were included in the price at this time which btw was an exceptionally great rate too. If you are wanting to be on Georgian Bay which is my husbands and my favourite place to be .. then there is NO PLACE BETTER .. than this !

We have just returned home from a lovely weekend at this bed and breakfast. We loved everything about this B&B from the beautiful view of Georgian bay to the warm welcome and amazing breakfasts. We would give our B&B experience here a 5*****.

Wonderful hosts and homemade breakfast's are fantastic. Truly enjoyed my visit. Would highly recommend this B & B to anyone. It felt just like home. The rooms are beautiful and very comfortable. Thanks again.

- Bonnie, from Toronto, Canada 12 August 2011

Peaceful, tranquil and relaxing is how I'd describe this wonderful B and B. A true getaway from the everyday. We stayed in the main suite. Ideal for longer stays but alas we only stayed two nights this time. Jacquie and Robert are gracious hosts. Breakfast was delicious. The grounds are ideal for taking pictures. Especially in spring with the flower garden, Trilliums in the forest and the 'resident' hummingbird. It was a short while ago that we visited but I can still remember the visit like it was yesterday. I'd highly recommend Beacon Shore to anyone. If ever we are in Midland region again and in need of a place to stay we'll check in here.

The Beacon Shore B & B is a wonderful place to stay! It was our first time in a B & B and we loved it so much! Jacquie and Bob are wonderful persons and excellent hosts. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the beautiful garden and the amazing view on Georgian Bay. We recommend the Beacon Shore B & B, it´s the best place! Roman & Barbara

One of the best accommodation in B&B category, best hosts we ever met, best location to spend time with your better half and was one of the memorable time spent in vacation in summer 2010 with my wife. I would love to go there again this summer.

- Daljit S Deogun, from Canada, Brampton 21 February 2011

After doing much research and reading all the testimonials here for Beacon Shore, I decided to contact Jaquie and Bob about a 3 night stay for my sister and I. Since this was my first experience with B&B accommodations, I was very nervous about staying in someone else's home, but from their first reply to their goodbye the morning we left they were warm, gracious and welcoming.

Their attention to detail extended beyond my sometimes too high expectations. Beacon Shore's decor is lovely and the accommodations are immaculate clean, cozy and comfortable. We had unscented yet soft fluffy towels in our private bathroom and crisp bed linens that had the fresh scent of the outdoors. A blessing for someone with fragrance allergies! The grounds are expansive, beautifully kept and offer amazing views. Guest are welcome to sit and relax in numerous garden spots or wander the grounds and trails. I had not mentioned my allergies, so I was more than pleasantly surprised to be asked about any dietary needs or preferences. Our breakfasts were amazing and each delicious course was tailored to our individual tastes, and included yummy homemade goodies.

Unforgettable! I highly recommend Beacon Shore and look forward to another stay there when I'm in Ontario again! Thank you Jaquie and Bob!

This "Bed and Breakfast" is the best we have ever stayed at, and we do a lot of travelling. Jacquie and Bob are the perfect host and hostess. After we checked in, we were escorted down to their private dock, where our pictures were taken, and we were invited to enjoy the awesome view. Their home is gorgeous, the rooms are spotless, and best of all....each room has their very own bathroom. The breakfast is incredible, starting with the fruit plate (I counted the variety of fruits on it..there was 13 different fruits)then a most wonderful choice of breakfast entrees. The grounds are well groomed, and guests are invited to wander. We recommend this B&B to everyone. We definitely are planning to return often. Alex and Helene Malcolm

I appreciated the quality of home owners. Charming people to listen to our needs. The atmosphere was really family but of respect and discretion. The house, with splendid rooms is really comfortable. It is surrounded by woodland overlooking Georgian Bay. A beautiful sight, we have benefited by our hostess who was kind enough to lead to their private dock. Great moment of relaxation! Evidence relating to the departure showed that we were appreciated. I really recommend this place!

As near perfect accomodations and overall B & B ezperience as we have had! Gracious hosts, Jacquie and Bob, from check-in to departure made our brief stay all too brief. The attention to detail in decor, gardening and service were excepional, as were the comfort of the room and bed. Bob's spectacular array of fruit and toast dishes along with Jacquie's delicious egg dishes were first rate! And the conversation was most enjoyable. The shared love of gardlening and photography were additional bonuses.

- Dr. Peter and Mrs. Ella Lynne Bohm, from Parry Sound, Ontario 2 August 2010

Definitely the best place we stayed at this year, among five. We felt like staying much longer. Everything was perfect: the location, the spotless rooms and bathrooms, the garden and the outdoors in general.. and of course the fantastic choice of breakfasts. Delicious and healthy. The hosts are irresistibly charming and friendly. Jacquie speaks good French, so that my parents, who speak only French, felt comfortable and relaxed. A truly wonderful place,we found it hard to leave!!

- Biljana DIMIC, from Le Perreux, France 24 July 2010

This was one of those life-changing vacations where your whole mindset shifts. I can't say enough good things about this B&B and its gracious hosts, Bob and Jacquie. Everything was immaculate, the house and outdoor setting was beautiful, the breakfast divine.

I wrote about Beacon Shore (unsolicited) on my travel blog, Milliver's Travels. There are two articles if you want to check them out (my husband took photos so it's not all text). In the top menu bar at milliverstravels.com click on Lodging > Bed & Breakfast for the main article. At the bottom of that story you'll find a link to the one I did about breakfast at Beacon Shore. The breakfast deserved an article all to itself!

- Milli Thornton, from Youngstown, Ohio, USA 14 July 2010

Best B&B I've been to! The rooms are so clean and comfortable! Nice view overlooking the Georgian Bay, excellent breakfast, and the owners are so nice! I can go on and on with this wonderful place...

- Zenda, from Toronto, Ontario 9 May 2010

April 2010 became memorable when we visited Canada for a visit to our relatives in Ontario and that went well. Next to that at home we searched through BBCanada and we had already a two day overnight stay in mind at Bob and Jacquie's B&B in Midland. We saw the scenery even more breathtaking than the pic's in the website can show! We so much enjoyed our stay, great views combined with kind and warm hospitality, large and comfortable suite-room + a chef style breakfast feast every morning! In all we can highly recommend this B&B to those people who want to feel like the ease of being at home and enjoy the attention and service of the highest level of hospitality!

Still awaiting our extended flight back because of the canecellations due to the Iceland vulcano ashes we anticipate getting back to them in the future!

Cheers,

My husband and I began visiting Beacon Shore back in 1996, I believe. We have returned at least 8 times and intend to return again this October. We call the Queen Suite "our" room and begrudgingly share it with others when we cannot visit. We have many memories of our visits to this oasis of beauty. Let me share a few: **Molly, the sweet kitty, has on occasion brought "treats" for us to see from her outdoor hunting expeditions. She has, on rare occasions, allowed me to pick her up and be rewarded with a warm purr. **We have also made friends with the many hummingbirds who enjoy a morning snack while we are luxuriating over one of the marvelous breakfasts Jacquie serves. Be prepared to skip lunch as you will leave the table entirely satiated. **Of course Bob does have a hand in the plentiful fruit plates prepared. He is also responsible for many of the beautiful wood decorations in the home. Ask for a tour of his handiwork in the house. Do not miss the garden structures he has created that Jacquie has filled with lovely flowers. **Take a walk around the perimeter of Beacon Shore. Enjoy observing the variety of lake homes you'll pass, as well as open fields and the occasional friendly cow. **Be sure to visit the dock with a good book and your swim suit. For our more southern blood, the water can be a bit chilly, but it is definitely refreshing! The view is spectacular, even without the glass of wine we sometimes bring along.

I could go on and on about this marvelous piece of heaven but time and space prevent it. While I want Jacquie and Bob to have a prosperous experience, I want to be sure "our" room is available when we return. So, shhh....don't tell too many folks about this place!

With B&B experience in Canada, the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy and South Africa, we can honestly say Jacquie and Bob's Beacon Shore is the best in its class. Hospitality, food, accommodation, ambiance and location are 2nd to none. With pleasure we will recommend this B&B to our visitors and friends. They deserve to succeed in their endeavours. Best regards: Lina & Tony

- Tony & Lina, from ELORA, Ontario, Canada 15 July 2009

Five stars all the way for this incredible B&B. From the welcomed greeting and smile at the door by Jacquie, to the top notch accomodations, this B&B will be one we will be returning to again and again. The breakfasts are hot and delicious and the fruit plates are the best we have had. Sitting in the muskoka chair overlooking the Bay and taking in the peace and tranquility is a must. Smelling the sawdust from Bob's workshop adds to the homey ambience of this beautiful place. Thank you again for making our mini vacation very pleasant and memorable

I've never written a review before, but I'm writing from the room. I'm looking out over beautiful Georgian Bay, stuffed after a delicious breakfast. Everything here was perfect...

We stayed at Beacon Shore Bed & Breakfast for one night on our trip to Awenda Provincial Park. We were really happy, that we chose this place to accommodate. Everything was just perfect: quiet, beautiful house with a view to the lake, a clean and beautiful private bathroom even with the most affordable Twin room (85 CAD), very comfy beds, and the best breakfast ever (the plate of fresh fruits contained about 14 different fruit pieces!). There were lots of nice details both inside and outside the house. And of course, we loved the beautiful cat! I would say everything was arranged in a professional manner, but still we felt like being at home. We were the only guests that night, and enjoyed the silence a lot. The hostess was extremely welcoming, and we got good advise for our trip. In the evening, as recommended, we did a nice walk around the area, and enjoyed the gorgeous fall colors, the lake view, all the animals we saw (deer, horses, cows), fresh air and the quietness that surrounded us. We would definitely stay at this B&B again. If you like quiet surroundings close to the nature, privacy and cozy luxury, this is a right place to stay for you, too.

- Anita & Jussi, from Finland 12 October 2008

Superlative. Every aspect of this B & B is first class but you don't have to pay through the nose to enjoy it so it is top notch value as well. Try it, you'll love it.

Review by Janette Higgins author of The Best Places to B&B in Ontario: A Selective Guide Six editions of the book were published to critical and popular acclaim. Janette now publishes her B&B reviews and holiday reports online. Note 1: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend.

The MAPQUEST DIRECTIONS for this bed and breakfast DO NOT WORK. Youâ_Tll receive a detailed map when you book. .Janette Higgins

As I sat at the end of the long dock at Beacon Shore Bed and Breakfast with host Jacquie Black I actually got goose bumps. The calm Georgian Bay waters glinted in the warm sun and distant shores were ablaze with the colours of fall. When Jacquie and husband Bob first bought these 15 acres and built their 3500-square-foot house high up and well back of the bay, they didnâ_Tt have any shoreline. That came later when they purchased a waterfront lot across their quiet country road.

On our way back up the hill, past a century-old lighthouse, itâ_Ts apparent that even without waterfront, the Blacks have a property where they (and you) can enjoy nature. Trilliums carpet the woods in spring, paths and clearings appear where Bob removes deadfall and there are several spots with seating which are perfect for lakeviews, sunsets and stargazing. All this is fewer than 8 minutes from either Midland or Penetang. So as long as you have a car, it doesnâ_Tt matter one whit that youâ_Tre not in town.

From Beacon Shoreâ_Ts elevated perch you have a wondrous view of Georgian Bay from practically any room. The house is modelled on early Quebec architecture reflecting Jacquieâ_Ts French Canadian roots. (She loves having guests from Quebec so she can use her French.) Outside the bed and breakfast youâ_Tll enjoy Jacquieâ_Ts gardens, Bobâ_Ts arched pergola and various obelisks and the terrace created by both with stone from the property. Inside youâ_Tll find a comfortable home decorated in â_~timeless, traditional, classicâ_T as Jacquie puts it. Youâ_Tll be asked to remove your shoes so have something to put on if you prefer not to go barefoot especially on the entrance foyerâ_Ts granite floor. The guest living room has a wood burning fireplace (cross-country skiing anyone?) and the dining room an unusual crystal chandelier.

Upstairs two guest rooms each have private-use bathrooms nearby and another larger room has an en suite. Of the two rooms with private bathrooms itâ_Ts the one with the Queen bed that has the Georgian Bay view and tub with shower; the twin bedded room looks into the nearby woods and its bathroom has a shower stall. The colours of the two rooms are cheery yellows, creamy golds and perky greens. Then thereâ_Ts the spaciousâ_T Suiteâ_T which runs the full length of the house. The â_~bedroomâ_T overlooks the woods out back. The sitting area comprises a chesterfield that pulls out to become a queen size bed and thereâ_Ts a small table with two chairs overlooking Georgian Bay. In the large bathroom, you'll find his and her vanities plus a soaker tub and shower stall both of which hold two people.

Next morning youâ_Tll have breakfast in the sun room starting with a generous plate of various fresh fruit. Then the choice ranges from omelets, pancakes, French toast through to eggs Benedict or a sausage and cheese casserole. After, take a cup of coffee out to the row of colourful Adirondack chairs lined up near the embankment and inhale the view for the last time. Oh, you say youâ_Tre staying more than one night? Good idea!

Note 2: As happens with many of my picks, this bed and breakfast fell prey to the convoluted logistics of researching Ontarioâ_Ts B&Bs, all 4,000 or so. Iâ_Td added it to my list of potentials in 1999 when researching the final edition of the book that spawned this website. But no one was home and Iâ_Td only seen the outside. It took 6 years to get back. Iâ_Tm hoping to close that kind of gap now that Iâ_Tm retired (well semi-retired!) and can better afford the resources to do the research. Bottom line, this bed and breakfast should have been on my site all along and the message to you, dear reader, is that if you happen across a terrific B&B thatâ_Ts not reviewed here, please let me know.

Note 2: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the host know you read my review. Many thanks! Janette Higgins
