dot A Schooner Inn
A Schooner Inn is worth a visit if only to meet Colette! She's an absolute delight! Make sure you follow her recommendations for restaurants - we veered off her path & had a dreadful meal while the meals we had at her suggestion were significantly better. The Inn itself is very nice, the rooms well appointed & our room had a lovely view of Holyrood Arm. We recommend you stay here.

- Rick & Colleen Kampf, from Courtenay 8 July 2017

we just returned from our first trip to Newfoundland and stayed at the Schooner Inn for two lovely nights. Colette is a marvelous hostess, her breakfasts are delicious and the view from the front is wonderful as the Inn faces the water. Highly recommend this place of beauty and rest. We plan to stay here again, next trip to this area.

- Charlene and John Earl, from Ocala, FL 27 July 2016

We stayed here 4 nights and what a wonderful experience. Warm hospitality, comfy beds, lovely breakfasts diff each morning with everything homemade and a great hostess, Collett. She gave us 3 days of things to do around the area. Every evening we came back and sat out on the veranda and it was a great view of t he ocean. This is a nice central location to stay to explore the Avalon area of the province. This was the best B and B we stayed in our 3 weeks of travelling. The best part was that we could drive 35 min to the airport the last morning and Collett even packed us a breakfast to go with lemon blueberry bread, fruit and cheese.

- Karen p, from Toronto ON 6 September 2015

I cannot possibly overstate how wonderful this B&B is. Our amazing host, Collette gave us a lot of interesting information about the wonderful island. She is a very entertaining host, both personality and scrumptious breakfasts made from scratch. Her beds are made for royalty!! I hope my husband and I make it back there soon!!

- Teresa, from Newmarket, Ontari 6 September 2015

We found our stay at A Schooner Inn a delightful experience. The restored property is a short stroll from the beachfront boardwalk and captures the ambience of the 19th century fishing community. The fellowship provided by the innkeeper, delicious and beautifully prepared breakfasts combined with comfortable clean quarters made our stay memorable with absolutely no cause for complaint.

- George & Susan Johnston, from Halifax, NS 18 August 2015

A Schooners Inn is everything that others have said and more. We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our vacation and it served as an ideal location for us to explore the St Johns surrounding area as well as a launching point for us to see the rest of the island. The rooms were relaxing and Colette was especially charming.

- John, from Windsor, Ont 26 July 2015

We loved this B and B. We stayed at this quaint heritage style Inn for 3 nights on our way back to St. John's. The hostess was charming, with a great sense of humor and full of knowledge about what to do and see in the area The breakfasts were the best. Not just the taste but the beautiful way the food was presented. Each evening we d take a lovely walk around the bay and come back and watch the whales with binoculars from the lovely veranda.

- Kathleen and Edward S., from Toronto, Canada 10 March 2015

What a wonderful treat to stay at A Schooner Inn! The rooms are fabulous. Comfortable and cozy. Beautiful views of the ocean and a gourmet breakfast to die for! Colette went the extra mile and made traditional Newfoundland fare for myself and my cousin while we stayed at A Schooner Inn tracing our family roots. It was delicious. The entire experience at A Schooner Inn was wonderful. I'll definitely book a room there on my next visit, which I hope is soon! Thanks, Colette.

- Ann Burke Hess, from Lancaster, Pa USA 8 July 2014

Collette was very friendly and welcoming. The B&B is quaint with a glorious view of the harbour. Lovely sitting areas outside to enjoy the harbour and gardens. Our room was spacious and clean with all the amenities we needed. Collette went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. She even went to the store to buy bacon for my husband that prefers simple food for breakfast. Would recommend others to stay here. June 2014

- Gwen, from Strathroy, Ontario 19 June 2014

We stayed here for 3 nights and we loved it there. Our room was really nice and the gourmet breakfasts were really good too. We really liked the soft bathrobes and all the nice lotions and soaps. This B and B is also right on the ocean and really close to the highway. We had only a half hour drive to looking at whales and Nl birds. Every night we came back and sat out on the veranda. We wished we could stay an extra night because the airport was only 35 min away but was all booked. The hostess Collet was really friendly and often sat out with us. This was the best place we stayed on our vacation . The beds were comfortable and the coffee tasted great. It felt like home. Oh and there s some nice restaurants just a few minutes walk away.

- Anonymous, 12 February 2014

Collette, the hostess, is charming and engaging - very helpful with directions to worthwhile tourist sites. Hospitality above and beyond. She arranged a dinner for us at a fine local restaurant and we enjoyed a different gourmet breakfast each day. A fun location - look for the government's yellow submarine in the bay.

- Gary and Rae Weber, from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada 3 February 2014

A charming B&B, beautiful veranda, flowers, patio, comfortable rooms, gourmet breakfast, heritage house with updated amenities, able to walk to a restaurant and around the bay, a very serene setting!

- Janet Hamill-Miller, from Bradford, Ontario 1 January 2014

Great food and very nice rooms. The on site hostess Colett has charm, wit and knowledge of the area. Stayed there 4 nights. It was 5 star all the way. Spot on location for touring around diff areas of the Avalon. We got to the airport in st John s in only 35 min and went to the famous George St in John s downtown in just 25 min to be screeched in.

Tip: ask Collett for one of her 4 diff 1 day trip itineraries. It lists what to do and see with tips on where to go for lunch, crafts, art, whale watching, museums, seabirds, hiking even how to get there. Each is a diff area to visit.

We d highly recommend this B and B. As her sign in the breakfast room says we came in as strangers but left as friends when we tearfully bid goodbye.

- Sheila L., from London, Ontario 27 October 2013

After reading some of the great reviews, we reserved 4 nights in Sept and loved it! Our guest room was lovely....lots of extra amenities.....very comfortable beds and most of all delicious morning breakfasts and really good coffee! This is a great central location...close to st John s, Irish loop and St Mary s ecological reserve and trans Canada highway. The hostess Colette, couldn t do enough for us. ...she really made us feel welcome.

One evening having been caught in a downpour of rain colette dried our clothes and sent hot coffee and fresh gingerbread to our room.

I d highly recommend this B and B ...it was by far our most of the 5 we stayed in and it s location by the sea is bonus!

- Anonymous, 23 September 2013

We recently stayed 3 nights at the Schooner Inn. Our room (Crow's Nest) was nice - bedding good, comfortable mattress and pillows, storage space in small wardrobe and dresser drawers (a little tight with suitcases, but manageable), good bathroom with bathrobe, good towels, soap, shampoo, cream, magnifying mirror and hair dryer. Cute decorations and good views to the cove. There's a boardwalk close by for a walk/stroll along the water. Diner close by for evening meal if needed.

Colette is a gracious hostess who works hard at making sure you have an enjoyable experience. She has a great and infectious laugh with a wonderful sense of humour. We had some good times in the evenings chatting and laughing with her and other guests. Her breakfasts are varied and the presentation is nice. We really appreciated her having gone the extra mile to go to Halliday's Meat Market to pick up breakfast sausages for us. They were delicious! Thank you, Colette.

The Inn is well situated for getting to many different locations - St. John's, the Irish Loop, Cupids, etc. We are happy to recommend the Schooner Inn as a destination.

- Monika and Jim, from Toronto, Canada 7 September 2013

Our first time to Newfoundland, and Collette, at A Schooner Inn made it feel like we were long lost relatives!

We immediately felt "at home", and our every need was met beautifully! We had the lovely Captains room, and breakfast the next morning was beyond our expectations!

We highly recommend a stay there! In a great location for the Avalon region!

- Nancy O'Heir, from Sedona, Arizona, USA 4 September 2013

We have stayed in B&Bs from the southern tip of New Zealand to the north of Scotland. This B&B was the best of all. Colette is a gracious and well informed hostess and her breakfasts "are to die for".

- Dr. John and Heather Jeffery, from Hampton, New Brunswick 31 August 2013

My wife and I along with good friends from British Columbia had the pleasure of staying at 'A Schooner Inn' for three nights, 13 to 15 August 2013. We were blown away by our experience in NL in general and 'A Schooner Inn' in particular. The owner/ operator, Colette Kavanagh, is a charming and well informed lady who is prepared to welcome you to her warm Victorian Seaside Inn as family sharing the culture and culinary delights of Newfoundland. She and her husband were the most gracious hosts, making our stay in Holyrood a most pleasant and unforgettable experience.

- Lee & Betty Myrhaugen, from Head St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia, B3Z 2A7 29 August 2013

Our stay at a Schooner Inn was the last two nights of our trip and by far the best two nights. Colette was a wonderful hostess. The house is beautiful and we were fortunate enough to stay in the new housekeeping unit with a kitchen and our own private deck and entrance. We enjoyed a lovely happy hour on the deck with Colette and the other guests sharing our travel stories. It was a short walk to restaurants in Hollyrood and an easy 30 minute drive to St. Johns. Our two breakfasts were outstanding. We would stay there again and will recommend to others.

- Gaye & Greg, from Lantzville, BC 25 August 2013

My wife and I along with another couple stayed at 'A Schooner Inn' for 3 nights and it was by far the best accommodations we experienced during our tour of NL. The beautiful heritage home(Circa 1884)was charming and extremely comfortable with well decorated rooms and ensuites. Colette and Bob were very gracious hosts in every respect--they made us feel right at home and were like family!! The gourmet breakfasts were divine. Highly recommended and we would go back again in a minute--in one word, terrific !!

- Mary and Barry Bowen, from Vancouver Island, BC 24 August 2013

My husband and I just stayed at the A Schooner Inn August 18th and it was the best b and b on the island or at least on our trip. Colette and Bob our hosts were so friendly and down to earth. The room we stayed in the captains room was amazing no detail left out, beautifully decorated. The ensuite bathroom was also so beautiful. We sat outside on their sitting area deck looking out on the harbour, the sitting area is so cozy. We visited with Colette and Bob and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Now for the breakfast it was superb. Started with a nice greek yogurt with fresh peaches, granola, maple syrup then Colette brought us out a plate with croissant with ham and swiss and plum compote, so delicious. Thank you again Colette and Bob I would definitely recommend this b and b !!!

- Susan and Brian Rollins, from Madoc, ON 20 August 2013

We stayed at A Schooner Inn with another couple in late July 2013. It is a beautiful B&B with a fantastic view, lovely rooms and a thoroughly enjoyable gourmet breakfast! We all so enjoyed the hostess, Colette! She was very welcoming and felt like a friend by the time we left! Highly recommended!

- Randy and Kathy Hawley, from Ontario, Canada 20 August 2013

Stayed at B and B located in this Heritage Home in July/13 and it is lovely. Decorated beautifully and functionally. Lovely outdoor area to sit. Collette is amazing gourmet cook. Situated well for travel within Avalon and to St. John's. Very nice diner called Railway Diner within walking distance on board walk. Very Satisfied Guest..

- Francine et Denis, from Blainville, Qc 8 August 2013

- Colette et John, from Shefford, Quebec 7 August 2013

Thank you Collette for making our 5 day stay with you so special. you have the knack of making your guests feel mso at home and there is nothing you won't do. Your breakfasts are exceptional and always a surprise!! Your home is unique and the rooms so comfy!! Looking out over the harbour is THE best!!

- Rosalind and Terry Morris Abbott, from London Ontario 4 August 2013

We stayed at this B & B for 3 nights and it was fabulous. Rooms were super clean and very comfortable and all 3 breakfasts were fantastic (a different breakfast each morning) and presentation of the breakfasts were unbelievable. The innkeeper Colette couldn't do enough for us and went way out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and happy, which we were every minute of our stay there. This is a top notch B & B and I think out of the 7 different B & B's we stayed at on our trip through Newfoundland, this was the top one. I don't hesitate to recommend this in a heartbeat.

- Toby Meehan, from Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada 30 July 2013

My wife, Jo, and I just finished our first vacation in Newfoundland in a wonderful relaxed atmosphere by staying at A Schooner Inn for the final three days. The Inn is '30 minutes away from many major attractions in the Avalon'. Our hostess, Collette, was "the best" and extremely helpful with touring and restaurant suggestions on any given day. The breakfasts were extremely nutritious to the point of pampering us with delicious food and service. Returning daily to A Schooner Inn was like "coming home" with a special 'Newfoundland Welcome'. Jo and I loved sitting on the porch overlooking the Holyrood Bay in the evening after dinner. We highly recommend this B&B! We will return soon!

- Tom Kahnert, from Ilderton, Ontario 30 July 2013

My third stay at A schooners inn. Just a fabulous home. Looking forward for the next visit at this beautiful resort.

- Roy, from Calgary 30 July 2013

We spent our first night in Newfoundland at the Schooner Inn. Lovely B&B and Colette was a very gracious and knowledgable hostess. Our breakfast was delicious and I would highly recommend this B&B.

- Sandy and Dennis Ochoski, from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario 26 July 2013

My husband and I stayed at A Schooner Inn earlier in July and it was fabulous! We watched whales from the deck! We needed to decompress as we took a direct flight from Calgary and had jet lag when we got there and this was the perfect place to do it! Food was delicious, company was wonderful and we just had a great time. Would recommend this lovely B&B to everybody!

- Maureen & Ken Heon, from Red Deer, Alberta 22 July 2013

Wht a find in an Inn ! We stayed here 3 nights to tour the Avalon in Nl Great value for money......gourmet breakfasts to die for... ....on our last morning we started with Greek yogurt topped with a maple syrup...then on top were fresh apricots and chocolate banana nut granola...and believe it or not it was served in one of those little martini glasses and a duck to hold my spoon. Then came smoked Atlantic salmon cooked in eggs and Chives ..yummmm......the rooms are great too....and I m even sold on those Egyptian cotton sheets To beat the heat. The best part of all this was the price...only $139 a night....$60 less than similar places we stayed in St John s and only 25 min away.... Colette..we miss your hospitality already! This morning we opened a flip top yogurt container ! Ahhhh memories...

- Kathleen and Tony, from Vancouver BC 22 July 2013

This bed and breakfast is a hidden gem. We were on our way home to Toronto to catch the ferry in Argentia. So we decided to stay overnight at the Schooner. Collette is a charming hostess. She made us feel very welcome. It is a very homely type of Inn and she cooked us a gourmet breakfast.I would give this place a rating of five stars for all categories.

- Lee, from Whitby,Ontario 21 July 2013

Peace and tranquility is what this little Inn on the sea offers. We were fortunate to have whales come in to the bay as we were arriving ! We came out and sat with other guests in a lovely sitting area in the evening. Colette brought us out rhubarb lemonade and some homemade cookies

Our guest room was wonderful. I loved the little Nl made soaps and the rose geranium body lotion. The room had so many other amenities too...bathrobes...a safe...and even binoculars ! It was definitely 5 star !

What a great way to end our Nl vacation.. the next day we drove to the airport in a half an hour. Thank you Colette for everything. I d highly recommend this as a great b and b

- Sandy and Roman, from Calgary, alberta 16 July 2013

We arrived strangers and left as friends. Colette is a lovely hostess. She provides a welcoming atmosphere, wonderful breakfasts (we particularly liked the yoghurt, maple syrup and apricots) and well appointed rooms. I particularly enjoyed sitting outside with my book each morning before everyone else got up. Sorry we missed the whales the days they came into the bay; but we had wonderful views elsewhere, all within driving distance! We are four middle-aged adults who truly enjoyed our stay.

- Norah, from Owen Sound, ON 15 July 2013

Thank you Colette for a wonderful stay at your B&B (on two separate occasions). Your warm hospitality, very delicious food preparations and taste, and your central location - has landed a place in our memory books. We will highly recommend your B&B to all our friends - and look forward to visiting you again in the future. Thanks also for the endless laughter and local Newfoundland lore - it was great!

- Marie Bean, from Ottawa, Ontario 9 July 2013

First time visiting the Rock we had the pleasure of staying in 1884 renovated Victorian B&B. The owner Cloette and husband Bob provided us with a five star retreat, and Cloettes gourmet cooking was excellent. The friendly atmosphere made us fell at home. This has been one of the best B&B experience we have ever had. We will return.

- Carman & Kim Brekke, from Burnaby, BC 2 July 2013

We spent our last night of a fantastic Newfoundland trip here. We were so pleased with everything. Collette is a charming and entertaining host with many stories and information on local customs and food. We stayed in the Crow's Nest room with a great harbour view. The room was lovely and the breakfast delicious. We really appreciated the evening tea tray, with freshly baked gingerbread, delivered to our room. The inn is close enough to St John's that we were able to go downtown to shop and lunch before our 4 pm flight. Thanks again Collette.

- David and Karen Walker, from Wallaceburg Ontario 30 June 2013

We highly recommend a stay with Colette at this quaint inn. While commuting to St. John's to tour historical sites in mid-June of 2012, we enjoyed this escape to a peaceful, beautiful bay setting. The accommodation is immaculate and comfortable and the breakfasts delectable. Colette's company for late-afternoon patio visits enjoying the view and conversational exchanges, along with other guests, added special memories for our Newfoundland visit. After our three-night stay, we bade a fond farewell to a new friend!

Holyrood is a diamond nestled away from the hustle and bustle and provided us with the feeling of a summer-cottage vacation. After busy days of touring, Holyrood is a wonderful respite for evening walks, gorgeous landscape photos, serendipitous sightings of whales and seals, and spontaneous visits with friendly local residents. We would love to return to Colette's lovely B & B if we have occasion to visit "the rock" again.

- Ferne & Murray, from Saskatoon, Sk 21 January 2013

- Ghyslaine et Yves, from Québec, QC 21 December 2012

Date of Visit: August 5,2012

The view from the Inn overlooking the bay is peaceful and relaxing. Immaculate bedrooms and bathrooms with creative design and decor adds to the comfort and pleasure of staying at the Schooner Inn. The breakfast menu is hard to beat. Hostess Colette reflects the friendly, hospitable and loving character of Newfoundlanders. We certainly recommend staying at the Schooner Inn.

- Bev & Dave Akagi, from Richmond Hill, Ontario 11 December 2012

An absolutely beautiful spot! Our bedroom was fitted with the most comfortable furniture and creative decor while the bathroom provided pure relaxation with a great soaker tub. The deck and surrounding scenery was wonderful, as well as the food and company. A wonderful spot to be recommended to anyone!

- Steve, from Trinity, Newfoundland 25 March 2012

An Excellent B and B. A lovely outdoor setting complete with a hammock and a beautiful view of Holyrood Bay. My girlfriend and I had a romantic getaway.

- D Myers, from St. John's 25 March 2012

A beautiful turn of the century home located next to the water. The updating of the home is exquisite, with large comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms.

We enjoyed our stay very much and were especially taken by the hospitality of our host and hostess. Colette makes a great home cooked breakfast, just a tad beyond that recommended in my Weight Watchers Plan!!!

The serenity of the location and the quiet solitude offered by the seaside locale all added to a memorable event in our travels.

Well be back to enjoy this B & B again, as well as to enjoy the unique scenery offered by Holyrood and nearby St. John's.
