Colourful, fall driving tours abound in Northumberland!

- Northumberland County, Ontario

Stunning colour at Dartford - photo by Debbie Stobbart

Whether you're touring by car, motorcycle or bicycle you'll find a variety of inspiring ideas with our rather enticingly named driving tours one hour east of Toronto in Northumberland County . The tours are even more exciting if you travel our region right now so you can delight in our fall colours in picturesque towns and villages.

Methodist church turned brewery

Northumberland County offers a taste of fresh cheeses and "Holy Smoke" ale!

Take for example our Curds, Cows and Beer Tour which incorporates a visit to Empire Cheese and Butter Coop which is the only cheese manufacturing plant left in Northumberland County and the first one east of Toronto! We love the fact that there are free samples of such cheeses like their new Caramelized Onion, Garlic, Caraway, Red Chilies (hot), Horseradish, Black Pepper, Dill Seed, Jalapeno, and Salsa. Chase this with a stop at a Methodist church turned brewery for samples of many types of beer one of which is peat-smoked scotch ale aptly named "Holy Smoke" at Church-Key Brewing.

Horseback riding

Colourful walks

Our Outstanding Views/Fall Drive slices right through the County north of Hwy 401 from Port Hope east to Brighton. It incorporates an optional short yet hilly hike through groves of red sumac and old apple trees, and down a steep hill to a meandering stream. If you’re looking to add a lunch with a view to your journey, we’ve suggested a couple of eateries overlooking Presqu’ile Bay.

Majestic Hills Trail

Apple picking

Its harvest time in Northumberland County and another publication you will want in hand is our ever-so-popular farm gate guide which holds a string of destinations like Cricklewood Farm in Brighton where you can delight in trekking about a 6 acre corn maze and; thereafter, pick you own apples, raspberries and pumpkins.

Kokimo Candles

Any time of the year you can use our free driving tours publication featuring 8 more themed tours (another fun one being Presqu’ile Park/Outlet Shopping) and a 36-question road rally which will take you through our countryside and a chance to visit our old general stores and a special artisan community.
