Located in Ontario's Near North, the highlands
are far enough to escape the crowds yet close
enough for a weekend getaway from many urban
centres:
•
2 1/2 to 3 hour drive north of Toronto
• 1 1/2 to 2 hours from Barrie
• 4 to 5 hours from Ottawa
• 2 to 3 hours from Sudbury
Centrally
located and easily accessed along Highway
11, the Almaguin Highlands is bordered by
Muskoka to the south and North Bay to the
north, between Georgian Bay and world-famous
Algonquin Park.
A
great destination for light-adventurers and
outdoor enthusiasts, the Almaguin Highlands
offers a variety of activities and excursions
throughout the year.
Hikers,
skiers and snowshoers will find endless trails
with the Discovery
Routes trails or the Seguin/Park-to-Park
Trail. The region also boasts easy access
to some gems of the provincial park system,
including Mikisew,
Restoule,
Arrowhead
and Algonquin.
Your
B&B hosts can help you make plans with
local outfitters and service providers to
try popular activities such as:
• dog sledding
• snowshoeing
• fishing and ice fishing
• horseback riding
• canoeing and kayaking
• golfing
No
advance planning is necessary for a refreshing
swim. There are countless lakes, rivers and
public beaches throughout the region perfect
for cooling off or soaking up some sun on
a warm summer afternoon.
As
exhilarating as our outdoor adventures are,
there are many ways to enjoy a more leisurely,
slower-paced visit to the Almaguin Highlands:
•
Touch the past at a local museum in Nipissing
or Burk's
Falls
• Listen to the sound of tumbling
water at Brook's Falls
• Admire the view over Lake Bernard
from High Rock Lookout park
• Wander through the unique sculptures
and artwork at Screaming Heads
• Take in a culinary
adventure
• Pick your own strawberries at
a local farm, or for a real treat, pick
a delicious handful of wild raspberries
or blueberries during a leisurely countryside
walk
• Visit a working honey
farm or maple sugar bush
• Gaze at the stars in our dark
skies -- no light pollution here! |
|
There
is also a thriving community of artists and
craftspeople in the region. Take your time
and browse through some of the countless studios,
galleries and charming little gift shops.
Your B&B host will be happy to give you
suggestions and directions to shops as well
options for dining or perhaps even catching
some live entertainment.
If you time your visit
right, you can partake in a number of small
town fairs and festivals. The Powassan
Maple Syrup Festival, the Country
Roads Studio Tour, the South
River Festival of the Arts, and the Kearney
Dog Sled Races are all popular events;
as well as the many Fall Fairs throughout
the highlands that close out the summer season.
And of course autumn is a beautiful time to
visit and marvel at the brilliant fall colours.
Every
member of the B&B Association of the Almaguin
Highlands is a proud ambassador of our home
region. We'll gladly help you plan a wonderful
visit at any time of year -- and we'll be
sure to start your day with a delicious home-cooked
breakfast! Visit our webpage
for more information about the B&B's of
the Almaguin Highlands.
