The Bed and Breakfast E-Traveller

Edition 60: June 28, 2006

In the 60th issue of the Bed and Breakfast E-Traveller, we take you to Winnipeg, Manitoba -- Art, Ballet, Theatre, Music, Sports, Concerts and Exhibitions ... Winnipeg offers it all!

Esplanade Riel

Winnipeg is bursting with energy in the summer after our winter hibernation. Even the hugely popular "Bears On Broadway" have awakened as the "Bears Beyond Broadway," located on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature. Alfresco dinning areas pop up at our many ethnic and diverse restaurants.

Visitors may take a ride on one of several antique trains, such as the Prairie Dog Central, or view waterfowl at the Oak Hammock Marsh, or see a Bison herd at the Fort Whyte Centre. One of the busiest places in the summer for outdoor activities is Assiniboine Park with its English Garden, Leo Moll Sculpture Garden, 1.5 km of paved trails through an urban forest, and a zoo.

Golden Boy

The Lyric Theater is another big attraction in the park with many free live outdoor performances throughout the summer, including performances by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Other cultural events include: the Winnipeg Fringe Festival from July 19-30; "the Wizard of Oz" at Rainbow Stage in Kildonan Park from August 1-14; and one of the more popular cultural events of the summer, Folklorama from August 6-19.

Sports fans can take in a Goldeyes baseball game (204-982-BASE), a Blue Bombers football game, or live horse racing at Assiniboia Downs Race Track on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, May through September.

St Boniface Cathedral

Louis Riel

For history buffs, there are many museums throughout the city. There are walking tours such as the one in the Historic Exchange District. You may choose from several sites to make up your own mind on whether Riel was a traitor or hero. There is the theatrical tour of St. Boniface Cathedral called "In Riel's Footsteps" and the Riel House National Historic Site. The Forks National Historic Site offers guided tours and the informative dioramas of the Manitoba Museum are not to be missed.

Winnipeg Beach Art + Culture Co-op Inc presents the Fifth WAVE Artists Studio Tour on September 2-3. As summer moves into fall, visitors may choose to attend one of the many Fall Suppers sponsored by churches and community groups in Winnipeg and the surrounding area.

Corn Maze

"Fall Migration Dinners" at Fort Whyte Center run September 1 to October 30, where you'll enjoy a lovely meal and watch thousands of geese gather on the lake at dusk.

Other fall events include "Scattered Seeds Craft Show" on October 20-22. Oktoberfest is another popular end of summer celebration.

Manitoba Theatre Centre opens with “The Tempest” October 12 to November 4. Prairie Theatre Exchange starts with “Apple” on October 11-20. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet opens with return of the very popular “Dracula” on October 19-20. Franklin Graham Festival on October 20, Santa Claus Parade on November 18.

Whether in our city for a weekend retreat or a gateway, staying at a Heritage Bed and Breakfast will be a memorable experience. You can count on the personalized service of charming hosts, the morning smell of fresh home baked goods and many special amenities that you would not find at a hotel. Because our summers are the busiest, advance reservations are recommended. Inquire about "Gift Certificates and Packages."
